Your questions, answered

BlackSpace is an expressive marketplace exclusively for Black owned businesses. Identity verification confirms that each seller is who they say they are — protecting buyers, protecting our community, and upholding our Heritage-Based Ownership standard. It takes about 2 minutes and only needs to be done once.

BlackSpace works with Stripe to conduct identity verification online. Stripe is used by millions of companies worldwide including Amazon, Google, and Zoom. Stripe confirms your identity by: (1) capturing and reviewing images of your government-issued photo ID to confirm the document is authentic; (2) capturing photos of your face and using biometric matching to confirm the ID belongs to you; and (3) collecting your name, date of birth, and ID number and validating them against a global database. Stripe asks for your consent before collecting biometric information and only uses your data per their Privacy Policy. Learn more about how Stripe handles your data.

Before starting, have a valid (non-expired) government-issued photo ID ready — not a photocopy. Use a mobile device if possible, as mobile cameras produce higher-quality images. For best results: capture clear, well-lit images without glare or blur; lay your ID flat and don't cover any part of it; remove sunglasses or masks; and find a spot with ambient lighting — avoid strong overhead lights or sitting directly in front of a bright light.

Both BlackSpace and Stripe have access to the information you submit through the verification process. We rely on Stripe to help store your verification data. Stripe uses access controls and security standards that are at least as stringent as those used for their own payments compliance data. Learn more about how Stripe handles and stores your data.

To request access to or deletion of your verification data, contact us through our Contact page. Please note that Stripe also holds verification data as an independent data controller — you can reach them directly at privacy@stripe.com to request deletion of data they hold on their end.

How verification works

Stripe Identity is the same technology trusted by platforms like Shopify and Lyft to verify millions of users each year.

Government-issued ID

Passport, driver’s license, or state ID. Must be valid and undamaged.

Selfie photo

Real-time selfie matched against your ID. Good lighting, face camera directly.

Instant results

Most verifications complete in under 30 seconds. Redirected automatically once approved.

Your data stays private

BlackSpace doesn’t store your ID or selfie. Stripe processes per their retention policy.

Why verification is required for sellers

The BlackSpace Network is an expressive marketplace association exclusively for Black owned businesses.
