Everything you need to know about search on BlackSpace
A behind-the-scenes look at the technology that helps buyers find exactly what they’re looking for — and helps sellers get discovered.
If you’ve ever typed a product name into the BlackSpace search bar and watched results appear before you finished typing, you’ve already seen the engine at work. But there’s a lot more happening behind the scenes than a simple keyword match — and understanding how search works on BlackSpace can help sellers get discovered more often and help buyers find exactly what they need, faster.
BlackSpace is powered by Algolia, a search platform trusted by thousands of businesses worldwide to deliver fast, relevant results. Instead of relying on basic WordPress search — which, honestly, leaves a lot to be desired when you’re running a marketplace with hundreds of products across dozens of stores — we’ve built a custom search experience that’s fast, accurate, and tailored to how people actually shop on a multivendor platform.
This post breaks down the four ways search works across BlackSpace, explains the technology that makes results accurate and instant, walks through what sellers can do to improve their visibility, and covers what the experience looks like from the buyer’s side. Whether you’re managing a store or shopping for your next favorite product, this is your guide to getting the most out of search on BlackSpace.
BlackSpace has four search experiences, not just one
Most marketplaces give you a single search bar and call it a day. BlackSpace takes a different approach. There are four distinct search contexts across the platform, and each one is designed for a different need. This means the results you see are always scoped to what’s relevant in the moment — whether you’re browsing products, reading the blog, or looking up a policy.
Global header search
The main search bar at the top of every page is what most people interact with first. It searches across all products and product categories from every seller on BlackSpace. When a buyer types in a term like “earrings” or “skincare,” they’ll see instant results from across the entire marketplace — no page reload, no waiting.
This is the most important search context for sellers. It’s where the vast majority of buyer journeys begin, and it’s where your products compete for attention alongside every other store on BlackSpace. The global search is scoped to products and product categories only — it won’t return blog posts or policy pages, so the results stay focused on what buyers are actually shopping for.
Results appear as you type, showing product names, images, and categories in a dropdown. Buyers can click directly into a product from the dropdown or press Enter to see a full results page. Either way, they’re getting to what they want in seconds.
Seller store search
Every seller on BlackSpace has their own dedicated store page with its own subdomain — for example, yourstorename.myblackspace.co. The search bar on your store page works differently from the global search. It searches only your products, not products from other sellers.
This is a big advantage when a buyer is already browsing your store. Say someone lands on your store page and wants to see if you carry a specific type of product. Instead of scrolling through your entire catalog, they can search right there and get filtered results from your inventory alone.
Behind the scenes, the platform automatically identifies which store the buyer is visiting and filters every search query to that seller’s catalog. This happens seamlessly — the buyer doesn’t have to do anything special, and as a seller, it requires zero configuration on your end. The search bar appears above your product grid and is ready to go the moment your store has products listed.
Blog search
The BlackSpace blog has its own dedicated search bar that surfaces blog posts only. If someone is reading about shopping tips, seller resources, or community stories, they can search for related articles without being interrupted by product results.
The blog search shows up to eight matching articles as you type, with the option to press Enter for a full results page. It’s a small detail, but it makes a meaningful difference in how content feels on the platform. Keeping blog search separate from product search means each experience stays focused and useful.
Policies search
The policies page also has a dedicated search experience. BlackSpace has several policy documents covering everything from returns and refunds to seller agreements and community guidelines. Instead of scrolling through pages of text to find what you need, you can search directly from the policies page and get instant results with highlighted excerpts showing exactly where your search term appears.
This is especially useful for sellers who need to quickly reference a specific policy during store setup or order management. It’s also helpful for buyers who want to check on something specific before placing an order — like how returns work or what BlackSpace’s shipping expectations are.
What makes search on BlackSpace fast and accurate
Speed and accuracy are the two things that make or break a search experience. If results take too long to load, people leave. If results aren’t relevant, people lose trust. BlackSpace’s search is built to deliver on both fronts.
Instant results as you type
Every search bar on BlackSpace returns results as you type. There’s no need to press Enter and wait for a page to reload. Start typing and matching products, posts, or policies appear immediately in a dropdown. This is powered by Algolia’s infrastructure, which is designed to return results in milliseconds even across large product catalogs.
For sellers, this matters because it means buyers see your products the instant their search terms match. There’s no delay that might cause someone to give up and leave. The faster a buyer finds what they’re looking for, the more likely they are to make a purchase.
Smart typo tolerance
People misspell things. It happens all the time, especially on mobile. BlackSpace’s search uses typo tolerance, which means it can recognize and correct common spelling mistakes automatically. If a buyer searches for “earings” instead of “earrings,” they’ll still see the right products. This is especially important on a marketplace where product names can be creative, unique, or include words buyers might not type perfectly.
But typo tolerance isn’t applied blindly. BlackSpace has fine-tuned where it’s active and where it’s not. Typo tolerance works on product titles, short descriptions, and categories — the fields where a buyer’s intent is clearest and where a small spelling mistake shouldn’t block them from finding what they want.
It’s turned off for long product descriptions and SKU numbers. Why? Because product descriptions are full of common English words that can accidentally match misspelled search terms. For example, without this tuning, a search for “Pisces” (the zodiac sign) could return dozens of products that mention the word “pieces” in their description. With the current setup, that search returns only genuine Pisces-themed products. The difference is night and day.
Clean, deduplicated results
Behind the scenes, some content — especially blog posts and policy pages — gets split into multiple smaller records for more accurate indexing. But you’d never know it from the results. BlackSpace’s search automatically deduplicates at the server level, returning only the single best-matching result for each product, post, or page. You’ll never see the same item show up twice in your search results.
High-quality images in search results
When your products appear in search results, the images shown are pulled directly from your product listings. BlackSpace’s search is configured to use a balanced image size that looks sharp in the results dropdown without slowing down the experience. This means the first impression buyers get of your product — before they even click — is a clean, high-quality image. It’s another reason to make sure your product photos are well-lit, properly cropped, and representative of what you’re selling.
How grouped products appear in search
If you sell grouped products on BlackSpace — a parent product that contains multiple child products, like a set of candles where each scent is its own listing — there’s good news. Every individual child product is fully searchable on its own.
This wasn’t always the case. On many ecommerce platforms, child products are hidden from search by default because they’re meant to be accessed through the parent listing. BlackSpace has customized this behavior so that every child product is indexed and searchable independently. If a buyer searches for “lavender candle,” they’ll find that specific child product directly — they don’t need to land on the parent grouped product page and scroll to find it.
This is particularly valuable for sellers who offer products in multiple variations — different colors, scents, sizes, or styles. Each variation gets its own place in search results, which means more entry points for buyers to discover your store. A buyer searching for “rose gold bracelet” will find your rose gold variation even if your parent product is listed as “Minimalist Charm Bracelet Collection.”
This is built into the platform automatically. As a seller, you don’t need to change any settings or take extra steps. Just create your grouped products as you normally would, and search will pick up each child individually.
How sellers can make the most of search
You don’t need to be a tech expert to improve how your products appear in search results. The search engine does the heavy lifting, but the information you provide about your products is what it has to work with. Here are the most impactful things you can do.
Write clear, descriptive product titles
Your product title is the single most important factor in search visibility. It’s the first thing the search engine looks at, and it carries the most weight when ranking results. A title like “14K Gold Hoop Earrings — Lightweight, Hypoallergenic” will perform significantly better than “Gold Hoops.”
Think about the words your buyers would actually type. If someone is looking for a birthday gift, would they search for “personalized mug” or “custom drinkware”? Probably the first one. Use the language your buyers use, and be specific enough that the right people find your product.
Use your short description wisely
The short description field is searchable and carries more weight than the full product description. It’s also what buyers see in search previews before they click through to your product page. Make it count by including the most relevant details — materials, size, intended use, or anything else a buyer might search for.
Keep it concise and natural. A couple of sentences that genuinely describe the product are more effective than a paragraph stuffed with keywords. Remember, a real person reads this before deciding whether to click.
Choose the right product categories
Product categories are searchable on BlackSpace. When a buyer types a broad term like “jewelry” or “home decor,” the search engine looks at categories alongside product titles and descriptions. Assigning accurate, specific categories helps your products surface in these broader searches and makes your store easier to browse.
If your product fits into more than one category, assign all the relevant ones. A scented candle might belong in both “Home & Living” and “Self-Care.” The more accurately you categorize, the more paths buyers have to discover your products.
Keep long descriptions natural
Your full product description is searchable, but the search engine is tuned to prioritize titles, short descriptions, and categories over long-form content. This is intentional — long descriptions tend to contain common words that create false matches if weighted too heavily.
Write your description for the buyer who’s reading it, not for the search engine indexing it. A compelling, honest description of your product — what it is, what it’s made of, who it’s for, and what makes it special — is more effective than a description padded with keywords. The search engine is smart enough to find the signal in well-written content; you don’t need to game it.
Add SKU numbers if you have them
If you assign SKU numbers to your products, those are searchable too. This is mostly useful for repeat buyers or wholesale customers who already know exactly what they want and search by product code. It’s a small detail that can make reordering seamless for your most loyal customers.
What this means for buyers
If you’re here as a buyer, the takeaway is straightforward: search on BlackSpace is designed to work the way you’d expect it to, and then some.
Type what you’re looking for into the search bar at the top of any page, and the platform will surface relevant products from Black owned businesses across every category. You don’t need to spell things perfectly. You don’t need to know the exact product name. Partial words, common misspellings, and browsing by category all work.
If you’re already on a seller’s store page and want to search within their catalog, just use the search bar on that page. It’ll automatically scope results to that store’s products only, so you can quickly find what you’re looking for without leaving.
And if you’re looking for information rather than products — a blog post about gift ideas, or a specific policy on returns — the blog and policies pages each have their own search bars designed for exactly that.
Why investing in search matters for the BlackSpace community
Search might seem like a purely technical feature, but on a community-first marketplace like BlackSpace, it’s much more than that. Every search is a moment where a buyer is actively looking to support a Black owned business. Making that moment fast, accurate, and frustration-free isn’t just good UX — it’s how the platform delivers on its mission.
For sellers, strong search means your products get discovered by people who are ready to buy. You’ve put time, creativity, and care into building your business and listing your products. The search engine is designed to make sure that work gets seen by the people who are looking for it.
For buyers, strong search means less time scrolling and more time finding exactly what you want. It means trusting that when you search for something on BlackSpace, the results are relevant, accurate, and worth your attention.
Search is how community finds what it needs
At its core, search on BlackSpace is about connection. It’s the bridge between a buyer looking for something specific and a seller who spent time and care creating it. We’ve invested in making that bridge as short and reliable as possible — fast as-you-type results, smart typo handling, full visibility for grouped product variations, and four purpose-built search experiences that keep things relevant no matter where you are on the platform.
For sellers, the best thing you can do is focus on what you can control: write thoughtful product titles, use your short descriptions well, assign the right categories, and let your products speak for themselves. The technology handles the rest.
